Fort Frances is located in northwestern Ontario about 89 km (55 mi.) west of Thunder Bay, having become the largest town in the Rainy River District.
Jacques de Noyan was the first European settler to reach the Rainy River in 1688-89. LaVerendrye followed in 1731 when Fort St. Pierre was built. In 1818 the Hudson Bay Company established a permanent post along Rainy River. The Town of Fort Frances was incorporated April 11, 1903.
The Fort Frances Museum and Cultural Centre offers insight into early pioneer life, aboriginal life, and displays of local arts and crafts. Rainy Lake is famous for its smallmouth bass fishing and is home to the Fort Frances International Bass Classic fishing tournament. Recreational activities can include sailing on Rainy Lake, golfing, or in the winter, ice-fishing, cross-country skiing or sliding in the park.
Fort Frances accommodations include quaint bed and breakfasts, personable motels, camping, and lodges -- all offering northern hospitality at its best.
